The Northern Cape, MEC for Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Mr Norman Shushu has unveiled the members of the District Land Committee (DLC) Seoding Village in John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality on the 08 December 2014
The DLC is comprised of the different stakeholders from diverse background such as farmers, politicians, government officials (local economic development officers, IDP managers, Municipal Managers), banking institutions, members of the national reference group and non-governmental organisations. The responsibility of the committee includes the identification of the available land in the district that can be purchased for the land reform programme, investigation and settlement of the land claims, selection of the land reform beneficiaries and development of the land reform projects amongst others.
MEC, Norman Shushu highlighted that the committee is entrusted with the huge responsibility. He urged the committee members to act responsibly in executing their mandate. The duration of the committee is two years. The MEC however lamented the lack of representation of women and youth in the committee.
"DLC will strengthen co-ordination of rural development and land reform at district level" said MEC Shuhshu. "John Taolo Gaetsewe is one of the 23 poorest districts that has been prioritise for rural development programme".
DLC is informed by the National Development Plan on land reform and rural development. It is envisaged that the committee will form an integral link, at a district level, in terms of the work that will be undertaken by the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform, and the new institutions proposed in the Green Paper on Land Reform, namely the Land Management Commission, Office of the Valuer-General and the Land Rights Management Board.
The MEC also handed over 120 IPADS to three rural schools in the district.
