Description
 
This is one of the four sub programmes within Programme 2 (Sustainable Resources Management) and it contributes towards achieving Outcome 2: Increased contribution of the sector to the GDP and lowering of unemployment rates. This is attained through the following interventions:
  • Ensuring minimization of loss / fragmentation of agricultural land as well as to maintain and improve the agro-ecosystems by Act 70 of 1970 and related legislation.
  • To support sustainable use of natural resources through the implementation of regulated land use (Act 43 of 1983 by maintaining the production potential of land, combating and prevention of erosion, preventing the weakening or destruction of water sources, protecting vegetation, combating weed and invader plants.
  • Contributing towards job creation and the securing of jobs.
  • Capacitating communities on conservation of natural resources.
  • Improving land available for production.

Purpose

To promote the preservation, sustainable use and management of agricultural land through the administration of Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act (CARA), Subdivision of Agricultural Land Act (SALA), and Fencing Act

Services and Functions

The specific functions performed by this unit includes constructing stock water systems, fences and animal handling facilities. Providing recommendations on applications for rezoning, sub division, consolidation,  plough certificates, transfer of water rights and change of land use. This is in addition to the farm and agro-ecological planning that the unit is continuously involved in.
