Description
Disaster Risk Reduction unit is one of the four sub programmes that reside within the Sustainable Resources Management Directorate. It contributes mainly towards achieving Outcome 2 (Increased contribution of the sector to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and lowering of unemployment rates) and the notable areas of contribution are:
  • Maintain and improve the agro-ecosystems by prevention and mitigation of the effects from natural disasters.
  • Contributing towards job creation and the securing thereof.
  • Capacitating communities on the preparedness and response to natural disasters.
  • Implementing drought intervention projects.

Purpose

To provide agricultural disaster risk reduction (prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and relief) support services to producers and other clients.

Services and Functions

The unit ensures that risk reduction services in the form of prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and relief are provided to clients in line with the existing disaster plans for drought, fire and floods. It has also designed a system to conduct surveys and assess the uptake and usefulness of early warning information that is continuously disseminated.
