MEDIA STATEMENT: MEC MANOPOLE TO DELIBERATE ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF HEMP TO SMALL SCALE FARMERS.

The Northern Cape MEC for Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform, Mme Mase Manopole would deliberate on the role small scale farmers can play at the Provincial Hemp Hybrid Workshop on the 14th March 2024 in Kimberley.
MEC Manopole will focus on the role the agricultural sector plays towards hemp since being declared an agricultural crop and it is regulated by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development DALRRD) under the Plant Improvement Act. While Medicinal Cannabis is being regulated by the South African Health Product Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA).
The MEC will also touch on how the cannabis industry is expected to bolster economic growth and create job opportunities within the province.
The workshop seeks to provide much-needed information to farmers to enhance their chances of entering the industry. About 100 smallholder farmers, who are interested in hemp production, are targeted.

There will be three presentations namely:
- Hemp by Department of for Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform.
- Medicinal by South African Health Product Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA).
- Progress on trial by Agricultural Research Council.
