TODAY |The Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform (DAERL)join hands with the Department of Health in Platfontein, Northern Cape to host a successful health & nutrition workshop.
A great turnout of young and old community members who were capacitated on the importance of food gardens and a healthy diet.
The workshop focused on aspects such as health and nutrition, facilitated by Dietician from the Department of Health, Mrs Nadia Potgieter while officials from DAERL tackled vegetable production.
DAERL’s Extension Practitioner, Ms Tsholofelo Tongwane conducted a situation analysis on the community which identified a need for food security as many of these households rely on government grants to sustain their livelihoods.
Ms Tongwane and the Platfontein community further planted spinach,onion,carrots and beetroot at the Platfontein Clinic.
The establishment of vegetable gardens at household levels can help vulnerable families access food,promote a better diet and improve their health. Part of the department's mandate is to ensure that communities are food secured.
Mrs Potgieter conducts regular home visits in Platfontein, she indicated that there is a serious need for food security in this community.
