📍PREVENTION ALERT: STOP THE SPREAD OF FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE
Following the confirmed outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in the Northern Cape, strict prevention measures must be implemented immediately to contain the spread of the virus and protect the Province’s livestock sector.
FMD spreads rapidly through direct animal contact and indirectly through contaminated vehicles, equipment, clothing and footwear. Compliance with biosecurity measures is critical at this stage.
All farmers and livestock owners are urged to:
- Restrict livestock movement
- Do not sell or buy animals, particularly from unknown sources
- Disinfect vehicles, equipment and footwear before and after farm access
- Isolate any sick animals immediately
- Limit visitors to farms and control access points
Failure to comply may accelerate transmission and deepen the economic impact on farmers, auctions, abattoirs and the broader rural economy.
Report any suspected symptoms without delay to State Veterinary Services:
