Between the period 2009-2013, a total of 2153 Household Gardens; 42 Community Gardens; and 221 Institutional Gardens were established throughout the province. This was part of the second class interventions implemented by government to increase household access to food and thereby mitigate the impact of poverty, unemployment and rising food prices. In 2013 the Department decided to evaluate the implementation of this intervention. The purpose of the evaluation is to assess whether the intervention is implemented according to its formulation and objectives in order to assist the Department to develop and implement improvement plans.
As part of this process, the Directorate PPME undertook field work to collect data In the Pixley Ka Seme District between 20-22 January 2014. Households and Institutions were visited by M&E Officials in 18 towns across the district. In the ensuing months the data collection exercise will be extended to the JTG district. It is expected that the data collected will provide important information about implementation, challenges, and improvements plans for the future.
