he MEC for Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, in the Northern Cape Mr Norman Shushu has appealed to various communities in the John Taolo District Municipality not vandalise their own properties such as fencing infrasture and windmill equipments. MEC Shushu was speaking at the launch of the National Fencing Scheme at Loopeng Village in the Joe Morolong Municipality on Wednesday 20th March 2013.

The purpose of the launch by the MEC is to assist farming communities with the improvement of fence infrastructure and to enable proper utilization of infrastructure, assist with rotational grazing and protect livestock. Communal areas in the John Taolo Gaetsewe district are heavily stocked and are characterised by poor infrastructure and deteriorating veld conditions.

He said communities must participate in their own developments and work together to fight poverty.   The Department has invested an amount of six million rand towards the project. It has created 87 job opportunities for local communities assisted in skills development and infrastructure development.

The project is funded through the National Fencing Scheme and is being implemented as a labour-intensive project.

MEC Shushu highlighted that about two million rand will be sourced for the cutting of bush encroachment (Swarthark) in the area. The MEC added that the department will equip 11 boreholes as water shortage is still a challenge for livestock.

The total  km of fence is about 143km and it seeks to upgrade the border fence and internal fence of three farms  (Ashfield, Darnall and Harrow).
