Learners Good morning, Dumelang

Learners, it is my privileged honour to address you at the beginning of the academic year- I hope that the first steps we take today, will lead us to greater heights at the end of the year.

As per the resolution of the executive council, led by the Premier Dr Zamani Saul, I was given Tshireleco high school as my adopted school for the current academic year.

Since this morning, I met all the stakeholders such as the School Governing Body and Senior Management Team and the Principal. Our discussion was based entirely on how best we can assist with the matric results outcome through intervention and the support you need this year and beyond.

According to the records, which I have seen, for the past years, the school has not been doing well, especially the matric class.

However, I am glad that our stakeholders have given me assurance that this year, through your cooporation, things will change.

Jaanong ke ikuela mo go lona Banake, gore tla re tshwaraneng ka matsogo, re boele gape, re tsholetse serodumo sa sekolo sa rona.

Banake, as your Parents and Teachers and the people of the Northern Cape, we know, that as matric learners, you have the finish line in sight as the race to complete your schooling career nears its end.

There is no doubt that matric can be stressful for most of you and your parents.

The task ahead can seem challenging and the fear of failure would, more often than not, want to overtake the will to succeed- and this might hinder your learning process.

The learning process need not be a negative experience at all.

I have a couple of tips for you, which will ensure that you do well in your matric this year:
  1. Stick to calendar, dates, times and schedule.
  2. Set your goals-for each subject. Ensure that your goals are realistic. Be creative in writing these goals on an A4 piece of card which you can stick on the wall in your study area. Take the time to remind yourself of what you wish to achieve, every day! This will keep you motivated!
  3. Get hold of as many past exam papers as you can. Working through past papers, and using the memos to check that you are on the right path, will ensure that you are ready for the actual exams. Past exam papers are key to effective exam preparation.
  4. Use your calendar to break this big task into smaller, more manageable, bite-size pieces. Be consistent and hold Yourself accountable for making sure that you cover the work needed.
  5. Ensure that you have a designated space to study. A small desk, a comfortable chair, good lighting and the stationery that you will need must be in place before you begin.
  6. The best way to study is to put pen-to-paper. You are seven times more likely to remember information if you write it down. Again, focus on past exam papers. Write down the answers and practice the areas you are unsure of-in writing.
  7. Look after yourself. This is a time to eat healthily, exercise, drink plenty of water and get enough sleep.
  8. Avoid distractions. Be self-disciplined and switch off your cell phone! Remember that you honour yourself by being intrinsically motivated and disciplined!
Matric exams need not feel like an impossible task. Don’t look backwards. Start working towards achieving the best that you can-today. Trust yourself and know that you can do this.

We have promised the Premier and the people of the Northern Cape a 100% matric pass, and it is achievable, akere banake?

Indeed it is achievable, only if we set our goals and stick to them

Lastly, Good luck in your studies and your exams.

To your Principal, Teachers and Parents, be rest assured of my department’s support, monitoring and oversight that I will be playing at your school.

Finally, with my first visit together with the team, we will donate sanitary towels, trees and plant food gardens as part of our support.

I thank you and make Yourself, the Parents, the School and Province proud. Ke ya leboga
