MEC Mase Manopole chairs the Gamsberg Biodiversity Offset Agreement Steering Committee Meeting
AS part of the offset agreement between the Black Mountain Mining (BMM) and the Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform , MEC Mase Manopole is chairing the Gamsberg Biodiversity Offset Agreement Steering Committee Meeting in Aggeneys.
Part of the agreement is that people's economic and environmental rights are adhered to, anticipated and protected, and a consideration should be taken towards any disturbance of ecosystems and loss of biological biodiversity in and around the mining areas.
The BBM is currently running a multi-billion rand Gamsberg Zinc Mine Project in the Northern Cape Provincial Government Gamsberg Nature Reserve (GNR) in the Namakwa District.
The offset agreement is in accordance with section 2(4) of the National Environment Management Act (NEMA), which provides that sustainable development is required and that consideration of all relevant factors including but not limited to the disturbance of ecosystems and loss of biological diversity are avoided.
