The Royal Bafokeng Pilgrimage is taking place in Kimberley this weekend.
15 October 2022
Led by the Bafokeng King, His Majesty, Kgosi Leruo Molotlegi, the pilgrimage, which is held every two years, is aimed at commemorating the Bafokeng Regiments who between 1870 and 1900, (during the Kimberley diamond rush), trekked to Kimberly's diamond mines for employment.
The aim was to work in the mines and raise the money that would later be used to buy land for their people back home.According to the Royal Bafokeng, the commemoration is a very significant event for the Bafokeng nation, hence this year, about 360 people, led by Kgosi Leruo, descended to Kimberley, to lay wreaths in honor of those regiments who perished at the Big Hole Mine.
MEC Mase Manopole joined the proceedings on behalf of the Northern Cape Provincial Government. Together with the Sol Plaatje Municipality speaker, Clr Nomazizi Maputle, they joined the King in laying of wreaths.
