During the LandCare Awards and closing ceremony of the 6th Biennial National LandCare conference held in September 2014 at Durban, KwaZulu-Natal; the Northern Cape Province was nominated to be the co-host of the 7th Biennial National LandCare Conference in 2016.
The Biennial National LandCare Conference is a National Awareness event encapsulated in the awareness strategy to halt land degradation. The importance of this countrywide awareness on land degradation is anchored within the vision that people are the custodians of the land and are therefore key for any sustainable interventions and livelihoods.
The LandCare National conference is co-hosted every two years (2) by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) in partnership with the nominated Provincial Department of Agriculture.
Since the inception of the LandCare programme in 1997, DAFF through the Directorate: Land Use and Soil Management have co-hosted six (6) Biennial National LandCare conferences in partnership with Provincial Departments of Agriculture.
The Objectives of the Biennial National LandCare Conference are as follows:
- To engage stakeholders in order to heighten awareness on land degradation and policy feedback on the LandCare programme.
- To recognize communities, partners and land users advancing LandCare philosophy.
- To share best practices and technologies in protecting and rehabilitating degraded natural agricultural resources and sustainable land management.
- To demonstrate the sustainable use of natural resources as one of the adaptation and mitigation measures for addressing the socio-economic impacts of climate change.
The conference will take place on the 3rd to 6th of October 2016 at Mittah Sepherephere Convention Centre themed “Making a LandCare difference towards land degradation neutrality”
