The MEC for Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development Norman Shushu has appealed to all role players to play a meaningful role in improving the leaving conditions of ordinary people. MEC Norman was speaking at the Comprehensive Rural Development Service Delivery Day in Riemvasmaak near Kakamas in the Northern Cape on Saturday.



The aim of the day was to exhibit and bring various government services closer to the Riemvasmaak Community. The Community had to travel about 40-50 kilometers to access government services. MEC said the new approach of government was to bring services to the people and to come to the people in rural areas.

The MEC highlighted that various departments were not only in Riemvasmaak to exhibit but also to encourage community members to make use of government serves. MEC Shushu also pointed out a number of projects funded by various sector departments that were completed:

•    45 household gardens established
•    Planting of 90 Fruit trees in Vredesvallei
•    Livestock handling facility in the Sending area constructed
•    Upgrading of the Early Childhood Development Centre completed
•    Urban Design Framework for the clustering of community facilities at central hub in Vredesvallei and Sending as per the Spatial Planning exercise already completed (0,8m)
•     
PROJECTS STILL IN PROGRESS FUNDED BY VARIOUS STAKEHOLDERS

•    Citrus Development, livestock and game farming
•    Construction of fences on the 46 000ha will be completed this financial year at an amount of R8 million
•    Establishment of 2ha community food garden is underway
•    Bulk Water Pipeline (construction of 37 km), including water treatment and storage reservoir will be commencing soon
•    Upgrading of the bulk water service at Vredesvallei will be completed in this financial year.
•    Construction of the sewer network and oxidation ponds will commence soon
•    Paving of  Internal Roads at Vredesvallei is underway
•    Upgrading of stadium at the sports field is continuing
•    Sanitation (building VIP toilets in Vredesvallei will commence in this financial year
•    Building of a clinic at the Sending will be completed in October 2010
•    Tarring of the access road to Sending will commence soon
•    School infrastructure at both Sending and Vredesvallei  will be upgraded in this financial year at an amount of R750 000
•    Ablution facilities at the  two schools will be renovated at an amount of R600 000
•    Satellite Police Station at the Roman Catholic building will be operational soon
•    Upgrading of community halls in two settlements will commence in the second quarter of this year
•    Solar lighting and solar flood lights at the sports fields in Sending and Vredesvallei will be provided at an amount of R5, 1 million.
•    Planning and design of community hub in Sending (0,4 m)
•    Upgrading  of community halls in two settlements will commence in the second quarter of this year.
