DSC 0998The Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development together with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the Adventist Development and

Relief Agency (ADRA) distributed approximately 1000 chickens and starter packs to various projects in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality.

The distribution of chickens and starter packs were part of celebrating Nelson Mandela month which started on 16 July 2012. More than 15 Projects and 900 households benefitted from the distributions by government, FAO, and ADRA collectively. The aim of distributing chickens and started packs is the United Nations and government’s initiative towards the fight against poverty. It also seeks to encourage various communities to participate in their own household food production.

Further more the department stretched its hand to other districts as well:

  • Namakwa - Established home gardens at Steinkopf, and bought groceries for the Old Age centre
  • Pixley Ka Seme District – Established home gardens at Petrusville and Phillipstown while blankets were bought for 30 household, a house in Schmitsdrift was renovated which include the purchasing of kitchen utensils, carpet and grocery for the owner mme Pulane.
  •  Francis Baard – Three Old age centres received started packs and groceries.

The Nelson Mandela Day campaign was launched three years ago by President Jacob Zuma to celebrate the birthday of Mr Mandela as well as the tireless contribution he has made for the country.  Mandela Day was celebrated on the 18th July and is also an annual International Day adopted by the United Nations in 2009.
