The Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform, will bring various backyard farmers together at the Sol Plaatjie Farmers Market at the Galeshewe Circle on Friday – 09 February 2024.

The purpose of bringing backyard farmers together is to create a platform for them to market and sell their agricultural produce. Thus enabling them to generate income in order to ensure food security and sustainable livelihoods. It also seeks to encourage them that farming is a business and must be treated as such. The platform will also give them an opportunity to interact and share their challenges and experience as backyard crop and chicken farmers.

Farmers will be selling variety of vegetables such as spinach, onions, chillies and seedlings (strawberries, green peppers), while others will be selling live chickens, eggs, raw honey and herbal products. The will also be an information sharing session to further capacitate them.

The move seeks to address challenges farmers are facing hence such a platform for them to market their own products.
