The Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development has thus far controlled 2957 ha of acacia mellifera better known as (swarthaak) at Maphiniki near Kuruman in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality.
The Maphiniki Bush Control Project is an Expanded Public Works Programme that started in 2015 and has created short term employment opportunities for 110 people to date. The Expanded Public Works Programme is one of the many programmes offered by government as part of alleviating poverty and provide income relief through short term to medium term work opportunities for the poor and the unemployed.
The main objective of this project is to control the encroachment of bushes namely-Acacia Mellifera in order to improve the veld condition and carrying capacity.
The grant is performance based therefore only public entities that does well in job creation are been rewarded.Maphininiki and Ncwaneng village has 3888.07 ha of Acacia Mellifera and now only 1000ha remaining.
In 2015/16 financial year the Department of Agriculture Land Reform and Rural Development injected about R 2 000 000.00. The 2016/17 also the department pumped R 2000 000 whiles in 2017/18 financial year an amount of R 2 044 000. The project is expected to be completed by mid December 2017 and the total amount spend been R 6 044 000. END
